The licensing system and your responsibilities

The three licence stages, the theory test, learner and restricted rules, supervisors, and the penalties for breaking them.

By the end of this module you can:

  • Describe the three licence stages and how long you must stay on each, before and after 25 January 2027
  • Know what the learner theory test involves and what you need to pass
  • Follow the learner licence conditions, including L plates and passengers
  • Check whether someone is allowed to be your supervisor and where they must sit
  • Explain the restricted licence conditions and how you move to a full licence
  • Know the demerit points and fines for breaking licence conditions
