Module 1: The licensing system and your responsibilities · Lesson 3 of 6

Learner licence rules and L plates

A learner licence comes with licence conditions (rules you must follow while you hold that licence). Learner and restricted conditions are not printed on your licence card, but they still apply.

The learner rules

L plates

L plates: front AND backFRONTBACKBlack L on a yellow background.Clearly visible, and not blocking your view.

Your L plates must:

  • have a black L on a yellow background (no smaller than the official size)
  • be on both the front and the back of a car, van or ute
  • be clearly visible to other road users
  • not block your view to the front or rear.

You can buy L plates from driver licensing agents, or make your own. L plates tell other road users you are learning. They also help police check you are following your conditions.

What you can drive

A car learner licence lets you drive most light vehicles – cars, vans and utes – and mopeds, but not motorcycles.

Alcohol

There are also alcohol limits. You learn these in module 10.
