Module 1: The licensing system and your responsibilities · Lesson 5 of 6

Restricted and full licences

Getting your restricted licence

You must be at least 16½ and have held your learner licence for the minimum time (see lesson 1). Then you pass the restricted licence practical driving test. The test takes about 60 minutes, including a 45-minute drive.

From 25 January 2027 the restricted test will also include a hazard perception (spotting dangers early and saying how you will react to them) test: you describe the hazards you see and how you will react.
